FAQ's - CORE Technology™

Who developed CORE Technology™ for Holmatro?
CORE Technology™ was developed by engineers at Holmatro and we hold patents on this technology.

Is the CORE Technology™ Hose/Coupler System NFPA Compliant?
Yes.  Underwriters Laboratories has tested Holmatro's Patented CORE Technology™ Coupler System and revolutionary new CORE Technology™ hose.  Both the hose and Coupler System are UL Classified to the NFPA 1936, 2005 Standard.  Your local Holmatro Dealer can provide documentation from UL, but most importantly, look for the label!  If it's not labeled, it's not compliant.

What happens when you disconnect the coupler while under pressure?
As with a standard twin line system, it is very unlikely that you will be able to disconnect the coupler under pressure (during the process of spreading/cutting, etc.).  However, if by some chance you were able to disconnect under pressure, CORE Technology™ has the advantage of a built-in automatic return in the coupler.  If a coupler is disconnected, the oil automatically returns to the pump through recirculation that removes any pressure immediately.

What happens when you disconnect the coupler while under FLOW?
The ability to couple and uncouple tools under flow (hose connected, but control handled not activated) is one of the main advantages of CORE Technology™.  When uncoupling under flow, the coupler's built-in automatic return valve is activated and the oil automatically returns to the pump.

What happens if the hose gets kinked?
Through extensive testing, conducted by Holmatro® and our hose manufacturing partner, kinks and knots have not inhibited the flow or performance of the tools.  Even under the most severe test conditions, we have not been able to hinder the hydraulic oil flow.  Since CORE Technology™ hose is reinforced with para-aramid yarn, the permanent kink damage exhibited with steel braid reinforcement is not as likely to occur.

Is it possible to make a wrong connection?
It is virtually impossible to make a mistake with CORE Technology™ system connections.  Like using a fire hose or an electrical extension cord, there is a male and female end to a CORE Technology™ hose.  The power units have female connectors and the tools have male connectors.  With only one connection per tool, there is only one way to connect the hose (The right way!).

With a twin line hose there are male and female connectors on both ends.  When rolling out the hose, it doesn't matter which end is extended to the tool because it can be used in either direction.  With a uni-directional CORE Technology™ hose, isn't it possible that you could waste a lot of time advancing the wrong end to the tool, only to have to reverse the lay?
With CORE Technology™ there is no need to waste time rolling the hose out before you connect it.  Male and female CORE Technology™ couplers swivel a full 360°.  It is now possible to connect the hose to the pump and the tool while the hose is still coiled.  As you advance the tool toward the action circle, the hose spins freely and uncoils while you walk, saving valuable time.  If you still want to lay out the hose before you make your connections, CORE Technology™ hose is imprinted with icons indicating the direction of flow, allowing you to determine which end goes to the tool, even if you start in the middle of the hose.

Where did the return line go?
The pressure and return line are both contained in the coaxial design of the hose. The pressure line is at the core, surrounded and protected by the low pressure return hose.

What is the maximum length of hose that can be used?
Although the hose remains effective at much longer lengths, to provide the best tool performance (considering transit and pressurization times) Holmatro recommends a maximum length of 150' / 50 m.

What is the safety factor of the hose?
Both the inner (pressure) and outer (return) hoses are designed to a 4:1 safety factor (acc. to EN 13204).

What happens if the internal hose leaks?
Functionally, a leak in the inner hose would be no different from how the automatic return couplers work. When the pressure within the inner hose is released, either through a valve or a leak, the power unit automatically switches back to the first stage (low pressure) and the flow circulates through the outer hose, back to the pump.

What is the weight difference between the old and new hose?
CORE Technology™ hose is approximately 40% lighter than a standard twin line hose of equal length.

What do I do if I need to shut off pressure to the tool while it's connected?
Simply releasing the deadman's handle will release the pressure. With a standard twin line system, in an emergency situation the release valve at the pump is used to release the pressure to the tool. With a CORE Technology™ system, shutting off the pump will achieve the same result.

How much pressure is in the internal hose?
A CORE Technology™ system operates at the same pressures as a standard twin line system.  The internal (pressure) hose has a maximum working pressure of 10,500 psi / 720 bar, with a 4:1 safety factor.

How much pressure is in the outer return hose?
Under normal operating conditions, the external (return) CORE Technology™ hose sees pressures of only a few PSI / bar.  The outer hose is rated for a maximum working pressure of 363 psi / 25 bar, with a 4:1 safety factor.

What happens if the inner hose gets damaged?
In the unlikely event that the inner hose is damaged, any leaks will be contained by the outer low pressure return line.  When the pressure within the inner hose is released, either through a valve or a leak, the power unit automatically switches back to the first stage (low pressure) and the flow re-circulates.

What happens if the outer hose gets damaged?
If the outer (low pressure) hose is damaged, immediately take the hose out of service and contact an authorized Holmatro dealer to repair or replace the hose.  As the outer hose is the low pressure line, leaks in the outer hose pose far less risk to the user than a standard twin line system.

Is the hose reinforced with steel wire?
CORE Technology™ hose has absolutely no steel wire reinforcement. The inner hose is reinforced with the same type of para-aramid type yarn that is found in turnout gear and ballistic vests.  The outer hose is reinforced with a polyester yarn.

Can I upgrade my 1000 Series tools to the new CORE Technology™?
No.

Can I upgrade my 2000 Series tools to the new CORE Technology™?
No, not cost effectively.

Can I upgrade my 3000 Series tools to the new CORE Technology™?
Yes. The upgrade of a 3000 series tool or power unit takes only a few minutes.

What happens with thermal expansion on the new CORE Technology™ hose?
As with any closed hydraulic circuit, thermal expansion will cause the internal pressure to increase.  Should this occur with a CORE Technology™ hose, the pressure can be released using the PRD (pressure release device) supplied on the power unit.
