On March 12, 2000 the Mallets Bay Fire Department Heavy Rescue (Rescue 8) went to Milton for a report of a 1- vehicle motor vehicle accident. Assistant Chief Howard Rice arrived to find a Ford Escort that had rolled down a 30 foot embankment and was resting on its side in a brook and leaning against a tree. There were two people trapped inside. The driver was not complaining of injuries however the passenger reported leg pain. Both were still in their seatbelts and were being held almost upside down.

It was a tricky extrication as the tree was blocking both the driver's door and the B post. The passenger side was resting on the ground in the brook and both patients were in the front seat. Ladder 1,which serves as a backup heavy rescue, was dispatched to the scene to provide additional manpower to assist with the task of moving the patients up the 30 foot embankment. Charged lines were deployed to protect the patients and rescuers from gasoline that had spilled from the vehicle. After stabilization was accomplished using cribbing and a winch, two cutters and a spreader were used at the same time to perform a 1/4 roof flap at the rear of the vehicle. The patients were moved up the embankment using ropes and ladders. All operations were made more difficult due to the steep embankment and the brook but solid incident command and good teamwork resulted in a successful rescue.
