Rescuer's Guide Patch

To address the wide variety of Adobe Acrobat Reader software versions spread across our user base, and address Acrobat Reader compatibility issues with our Rescuer's Guide product, Holmatro, Inc. and Mitchell International have released a Rescuer's Guide patch that will allow our program to function independently from the Adobe Acrobat Reader software.  This patch requires that the Rescuer's Guide already be installed.  It doesn't matter if you are running it from the CD or from your hard drive.

  • If you've registered your software and already used your unique registration code to install your Rescuer's Guide, or if you've installed the program using the code from your CD Sleeve, right click here to save the zipped patch file to your hard drive (patche.zip 1,138kb).  Extract the patch.exe file and install it.  This process only takes a couple of minutes.

  • If you are currently running your Rescuer's Guide from the CD, using the registration code provided on the CD sleeve, and you want to install it on your hard drive, you must request a new code that allows for hard drive installation.  Once you've received your code, you can continue with the instructions below.

Installation Instructions

Note: For hard drive installations, it may help if you save your registration code to a text file, so you can copy and past it when prompted to enter your code.

Before installing, deactivate any virus protection software that may be installed on your computer and close any open applications.

1. Insert the Rescuer’s Guide to Vehicle Safety Systems CD into the appropriate drive.

2. From the Start menu, click Run. Type d:\setup.exe and click OK (where “d:\” is the drive where the CD-ROM is located).

3. The Rescuer’s Guide CD requires that Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 be installed on your workstation.

• If Internet Explorer 6.0 is not currently installed on your workstation, click Yes when prompted to install it. Your workstation will restart once the upgrade process is complete.  If 6.0 or newer is already installed.  You will not be prompted.

IMPORTANT DECISION POINT

• If Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.X is not currently installed on your workstation, you have two choices: (please note it must be 5.X and not a newer version!)

  1. Click Install to install a copy of Adobe Reader 5.0.  This is only necessary if you will not be installing the patch.
    OR

  2. Click Cancel and download the patch.zip file by right clicking on the link and choose "Save Target as."  Note the location of the file download for step 6.

This patch will resolve any issues with Acrobat Reader, regardless of which version you have installed, or if Reader is not installed at all.

4. Continue by following the on-screen instructions, accepting the default options.  If you change the installation directory, you will need to install the patch into the same directory.  When prompted to install the data to your local or network drive, click YES to put the data on your hard drive, or click no to run the program from the CD.  The patch will work with either option.

5. To place a shortcut icon on your desktop, click Yes.

If you installed Adobe Reader 5.0, and do not plan to install the patch, skip to step 7.

6. After the Rescuer's Guide program is installed onto your hard drive, extract and run the patch.exe.

7. Start the Rescuer’s Guide application from your desktop icon, or from the Start menu... All Programs... Holmatro Inc,  program group.

8. After reading the License Agreement, click Accept to accept it.  Note that the terms are for a single user license, unless you've purchased a multi-user license.  If you do not agree to the terms specified, do not click accept and uninstall the software from your control panel.

IMPORTANT DECISION POINT

9. Entering Your Registration Number

  • If you plan to run the program from the CD only, you may use the code provided on the back of the CD sleeve.
  • If you chose to install the data to your hard drive in step 4, and want to run the program without inserting the CD, you must enter the code provided in the e-mail response to your software registration.

Enter you code, click Next and you will be taken to the home screen of the program.

Note: If you've already installed your Rescuer's Guide software using the code from the CD sleeve, and are now trying to reinstall to run from your hard drive, the installation should overwrite the previous registry settings, however you may find it necessary to completely uninstall the Rescuer's Guide application and begin a clean installation.

General Information

Welcome to the Holmatro® Rescuer’s Guide to Vehicle Safety Systems CD. This section contains product information and tips that will help enhance your experience with this program.

*  After successfully installing the CD, operating instructions and other help topics can be obtained by clicking on the help icon in the program’s menu bar.

Product Registration:
Registration of this program is optional, however to receive an installable code, any important updates or to request any technical assistance on this product, the program must be registered on-line at www.holmatro-usa.com.

The serial number included on the CD sleeve will only allow you to run the program from the CD and the CD must remain present in a local CD-Rom drive.  Removing the CD during operation will result in an error.  If you do not have a local CD drive, need to install the software across a network, or are interested in obtaining additional licenses to use the software on additional computers, please contact Holmatro, Inc. at 800-654-0203. (Note: please register your software before contacting us, as this step is necessary for the installable option and will help expedite the process.)

Navigation Tips:

•   The buttons in the menu bar can be activated with a single left click.  A double click will be counted as two single clicks and may advance you to an unexpected location.

•   While viewing details about a specific manufacturer’s vehicle, pressing the  button in the menu bar will return you to the top of that manufacturer’s list of vehicles.  To select a different vehicle manufacturer, click on the “component locations” button  in the menu bar.

•   Pressing the “page up”  and “page down”  buttons scrolls one screen at a time.  You may also use the page up and page down keys on your keyboard.  The vertical scroll bar arrows and scroll wheel on a mouse (if available), will scroll the document in smaller increments.

•   The Vin Decoder is an added feature that we were able to include on the same disk as the electronic version of the Rescuer’s Guide.  After entering a complete vehicle identification number, the button will be activated, allowing you to click on it to obtain the make, model and year of the vehicle.  As this is a bonus program that functions independent from the electronic version of the Holmatro® Rescuer’s Guide, there is no link between these two sections.  Therefore, after obtaining the details from the VIN Decoder information, you will need to click on the component locations button  and navigate to the relevant vehicle details.

When you have Acrobat Reader 5.0 installed and have not installed the patch, the following information applies:

•  When your pointer is shown as a hand icon with an arrow in it , a single left click will zoom in on the information to display an enlarged view of the text or drawing.  To restore the page to fit the screen, click on the “fit in window” icon  in the menu bar.

•   The blue underlined text areas within the program are hyperlinks.  Positioning your pointer over the blue text will change your pointer to a hand with the index finger extended .  With this mouse pointer active, a single click on the link will advance you to the information referenced by that particular link.

o     Note:  To return to a previous zoom level or previous hyperlink screen, hold down the Alt key and press the left arrow key on your keyboard.  Each press of the left arrow key will take you backwards one view at a time.

If you've installed the patch as instructed in step 6 above:

•   The blue underlined text areas within the program are hyperlinks.  Positioning your pointer over the blue text will change your pointer to a hand with the index finger extended .  With this mouse pointer active, a single click on the link will advance you to the information referenced by that particular link.

•  The zoom feature is now activated by right clicking on the document.  A menu will pop up providing the following options:

  • Back - navigates to the previous view.  If you followed a hyperlink, this button takes you back to the page the hyperlink is on.

  • Forward - navigates to the next view.  This is only available if you've already clicked Back

  • First Page - Each manufacturer is presented in it's own self-contained document.  For example, while viewing details for a 2005 Mazda3, if you click this option, you will return to the model year selection chart for all Mazda vehicles.

  • Last Page - navigates to the last page of the current PDF document (ie. last Mazda vehicles page)

  • Find - this enables a text search feature that allows you to search the text of the current PDF document for a specific word or term.

  • Zoom - Click this link to zoom in on the current page.  You will zoom in more each time you select this option.  To restore the page to fit the screen, click on the “fit in window” icon  in the menu bar.

  • Print Current Page - Allows you to print the details of the current page to your default printer.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

The CD sleeves for both versions 1.0 and 1.1 of our Rescuer's Guide application state that Internet Explorer 6.0 and Acrobat Reader 5.0 must be installed on the workstation.  The term "or higher..." was purposely avoided for Acrobat Reader, because newer versions have implemented code changes that are known to be incompatible with the Rescuer's Guide application.

Version 1.1 will allow a user to continue without installing Acrobat Reader 5.0, warning that "it is likely that the Rescuer's Guide program will not function correctly, even if you have a newer version installed."

If you already have a version of Acrobat Reader that is newer than version 5.X, installing V 5.o will not overwrite your newer version.  If you do not wish to install 5.0 click the Cancel button and follow the installation instructions above to install the patch

If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you may choose to install Acrobat Reader 5.0 from the CD.  This will provide you with a working copy of Acrobat Reader V5.0.  You may still choose to install the patch and this copy of Acrobat Reader 5.0 will still function.  These two options will not conflict with each other.  Installing the patch enables the Rescuer's Guide program to operate independent of the Adobe Acrobat Reader application(s).

The Rescuer's Guide Software Version 1.0 (Rescuer's Guide Third Edition) wouldn't allow a user to install the program unless Acrobat Reader 5.0 has been successfully installed.  There is no fix for this version.

Note:  Installing The Fourth Edition (Software Version 1.1) will overwrite version 1.0.  Both versions will not run on the same machine.
