Frequently Asked Questions about the S.C.R.T.

What does S.C.R.T. stand for?

S.C.R.T. stands for Self Contained Rescue Tool.  This new design requires no external pumps, cords, hoses or heavy batteries.

Is the S.C.R.T. a hydraulic or electric tool?

The S.C.R.T. is a hydraulic rescue tool that features Holmatro's state-of-the-art two stage micro-hydraulic pump.  Like larger external hydraulic pumps, this micro-pump requires a power source to turn it.  Instead of using an external gasoline or diesel engine, 120V motor, generator, or proprietary DC battery driven motor, Holmatro turned to DEWALT, who is a leader cordless power tool technology.  Their standard 24V NiCd cordless system was found to have the power we needed, in an environmentally friendly, commercially available, compact package.

Using only a 24V NiCd battery how much power does this tool have?

Simply stated, the S.C.R.T. is a hydraulic rescue tool similar to our standard line of tools.  The forces are generated by a two-stage micro-hydraulic pump that is capable of providing the same 10,500 psi maximum hydraulic pressure as our external pumps.  The only difference is the leap in technology we have implemented.  Our revolutionary micro-hydraulic pump was designed around DEWALT'S superior battery system, resulting in a tool that is lighweight, without sacrificing power.  This leap in technology has allowed us to package traditional Holmatro power in a Self Contained Rescue Tool.

Is the S.C.R.T. battery interchangeable with my DEWALT recip saw?

YES!  One objective was to develop a rescue tool that does not require the use of a proprietary battery system.  The batteries supplied with the S.C.R.T. are specially labeled with the Holmatro logo and contact information, reflecting the partnership between DEWALT and Holmatro.  However the batteries are completely interchangeable.

How long does one battery last?

When asked about battery life, our standard response is that one battery will last for approximately 12 minutes of continuous use.  This run time is based on extensive laboratory testing where the tool was cycled from open to close, taking it to full pressure on each cycle.  However, this approximate time is a bit misleading.  We have taken a conservative approach, not to overstate the capabilities of this tool.  Under normal use, in the hands of an experienced rescue technician, we have experienced run times in the range of 13 - 18 minutes.  Actual run times will vary based on vehicle construction and actual pressures reached within the tool.  You will notice in most of the videos shown, the tool doesn't strain to make many of the cuts, nor does it require continuous maximum operating pressure of 10,500 psi.

How long does it take to charge a battery?

DEWALT'S charging system provides fast charging in 1 hour or less.  Practical experience has shown that it often takes much less time to "top off" a battery that has not been completely drained.

The DEWALT 3-Stage charging system also provides maximum run-time and extends overall life of the battery.

A battery thermal protection system prevents charging batteries that are too hot or too cold which would cause damage to the battery and a loss of run-time.

The charger also features an LED which communicates the battery charge status: charged, charging, power line problem, replace pack, and battery too hot or too cold.

The newest feature from DEWALT, which is incorporated into the charges supplied with the Holmatro S.C.R.T. system, is a fan cooled battery system, which decreases downtime and provides added protection against battery damage.

Is the S.C.R.T. powered by the same electronics used in the DEWALT recip saw?

The electronic system used in the S.C.R.T. is the result of years of cooperative research between DEWALT and Holmatro.  The combination of DEWALT's 24V Industrial Battery System and their 24V electric motor, provide the basic power plant that turns our micro-hydraulic pump.  However the solid state electronic circuitry that controls these components was developed by Holmatro, specifically for the S.C.R.T.  DEWALT, with their extensive experience with battery powered products, provided valuable information during this development process.  The advanced electronics that now control the S.C.R.T. provide increased battery life, battery protection, overheating protection, and other performance and monitoring functions not common in standard battery powered consumer products.
