Dashboard

The dashboard area has been reinforced in many of today's cars. The need to strengthen the passenger compartment while still allowing the energy of the crash to "flow around" the passenger compartment has resulted in much stronger construction behind the dashboard. In a severe impact the dash can fold down and trap the passenger. Pushing the dash up and out of the way can be more difficult due to the reinforced structure. It is not uncommon to find Micro alloy steel tube used as part of the framework of the dashboard.
The passenger's side air bag module is typically mounted in the dashboard and the rescuer needs to be very careful when using tools in and around the dashboard. The dashboard also usually conceals airbag system wiring and in some cases the control module. The wiring is often yellow in color and may have warning tags.

Great care should be taken to ensure that wires, sensors and control modules are not cut or crushed when using cutters, spreaders or rams in and around the dashboard.
